Hi Mitchell, thanks for your comment. I am by no means an expert but what I tend to preach is that it’s important to know yourself when it comes to spotting biases. First step is awareness. Alan Pease, author of the book, “The Answer” basically talks about it in the first two chapters. Our brains are driven by our RAS (Reticular Activating System); this is the sorting mechanism in our brains. Our RAS chooses which information it will see, bringing the unconscious to conscious. When we increase our awareness of potential biases we have, we will more likely identify unconscious behaviour. Of course, our brains will still operate unconsciously most of the time and that’s why making each other accountable also helps. I also encourage people who I work with to call out biases I may have.
