smile, you bitch: being a woman in 2015
Nora McInerny Purmort

Nora, I’m so sorry you had to deal with such invasive, paternalistic, condescending and objectifying behavior. Thank you for illuminating the inner struggles and pain we may well be dealing with, for which these dudes have zero respect. We need to teach boys compassion and respect for women from an early age. I am 64 and have been dealing with harassment my whole life. Our org, hu-MAN Up (@hu_manup,, works to engage men and boys to help end rape culture. We teach compassion, offer perspective and let them know that being a good guy is not enough — that silence makes one complicit. We teach them to speak up against normalized, everyday sexism — that #sexismisnotsexy. We use billboards, transit signs, workshops, public art, spoken word and theater. There is so much work to do. Thank you for your voice. Let’s get louder! ps. we have a call for submissions on our website. Your piece would make a powerful monologue, should you consider submitting it:) May you heal stronger in the broken places…
