Are you a college student interested in traveling or learning about other countries? If your answer is yes, studying abroad is a great way to do both of those things. Most colleges and universities have multiple options for students interested in studying abroad. Beginning this process can be overwhelming so here are a few important steps in the process of studying abroad!

  1. Pick Your Destination: The first step in choosing where you want to study abroad is looking into where your school sends students. Many schools have special connections with international schools that make studying abroad easier and more affordable. Look into these options and also consider other study abroad programs outside of your school’s programs.
  2. Meet with an Advisor: It is very important to meet with a study abroad advisor at your school. They are usually able to answer questions and help you through the entire process. Oftentimes, they can help you figure out destinations that would work well with your major and classes. In addition, if you have an academic advisor, it is good to meet with them as well in order to plan out your classes at your current school before you leave.
  3. Apply: Once the logistics are figured out, it is then time to apply! The application process can vary depending on your school and the study abroad program. Make sure to complete each required task on time! Deadlines can make or break your study abroad plans. It is crucial that you submit your application and necessary documents on time!
  4. Wait: This is likely the most difficult part of the process. As anxious as it might make you feel, you have to wait to see if you are accepted. While you wait, move onto the next step to help distract you from the waiting process.
  5. Do Your Research: Now that you have an idea of where you might be headed, do some research. Every country has their own unique culture and language that you will be immersed in while abroad. Culture shock is very common for students studying abroad. In order to help combat this, do some research about your host country. Look into the language and culture as well as social norms and expectations. It is impossible to fully prepare yourself but doing your research will help lessen the shock.
  6. Plan Ahead: Once you are accepted, it is important to start planning. Consider everything; saving money, flights, packing, housing and food. The more prepared you are, the easier it will be once you leave to study abroad.
  7. Pack: Packing can be very stressful. Pack the things that you need on a daily basis no matter where you are. For example, a tooth brush, your phone, a phone charger, glasses/contacts, etc. Packing clothing is a bit harder. I suggest looking up packing guides online to help you get an idea of what other people felt was most important when they studied abroad.
  8. Study Abroad: Congrats! You finally made it to the last step. Now it is time to hop on a plane and begin studying abroad.
