From disappointing jokes to groundbreaking wins, the film industry has made quite the splash in the New Year. Starting off on January 7, 2024, The Golden Globes broke the internet for all the wrong reasons. While there were exciting wins, the majority of the internet seems to agree that the negatives out-weighed the positives. Comedian Jo Koy hosted the 2024 Golden Globes and received backlash for comments he made about “Barbie” and celebrities in attendance. Many people have pointed out that Jo Koy’s remarks were both sexist and the very reason why “Barbie” was created in the first place.

While the internet expressed their anger towards Jo Koy’s failed attempt at a comedy act, multiple celebrities in the audience were caught expressing their disappointment as well. An awkward laugh rang through the audience to seemingly shake off the bad joke, but not everyone was as polite. People have since pointed out how Taylor Swift was seen giving the comedian a rather unimpressed glare while she took a sip of her drink and how Selena Gomez was seen covering her face in disappointment.

Unfortunately, this year’s Golden Globes ceremony was one big disaster that left people feeling less than impressed. Fortunately, the film industry made a comeback on January 15, 2024 with the Emmys only a few days after the Golden Globes. The Emmys had been postponed back in September of last year so these nominations are for 2023. Regardless of the delay, the Emmys were full of wins for people of color as well as the LGBTQ+ community. A few of the major wins by celebrities in these communities are Quinta Brunson winning Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Elton John winning for Outstanding Variety Special (Live).

Alongside the many historic wins, were historic moments that brought joy, shock and lots of laughs. One of the night’s highlights is when actress Niecy Nash-Betts finished her heartfelt speech by shouting “Mama, I won!”

Though for opposite reasons, the Golden Globes and the Emmys continue to trend online. For better or for worse, these events have since sparked much anticipation for what is to come this year in the film industry.
