IVF Treatment- What ? How ?
So let’s start, IVF — In Vitro Fertilization is a four staged fertilization treatment
1) Developing eggs (ococytes) with the help of fertility medications.
2) Collecting the eggs (oocytes).
3) In Vitro Fertilization of the egg and growth of the embryo.
4) Replacing the embryo back into the uterus.
These stages can be further longer if you consider the other processes,
Stage 1
Here will be classes and inflammatory sessions on IVF treatment, drugs & test which are part of the treatment. And you will be provided with date & time on which you have to have the drugs & to contact the IVF clinic in order to conduct the scans , blood testes and when to move on to the next stage of the IVF treatment.
In the beginning a drug similar to buserelin will give to you take on daily. There are injections & nasal spray is available as an alternative.This medicine suppress the menstrual cycle, and stop ovulating. The usage of this medicine is depend upon your medical condition. There will be tests to find out the perfect time for the IVF treatment. During this time have healthy food & exercise regularly and be aware that the hormone levels will be different at different time of the month and this is same with IVF also.
Stage 2
After your cycle has been suppressed it’s time to conduct the tests to know that you are at the perfect stage to start. Here takes place the introduction of the second medicine follicle stimulation hormone and is given as a subcutaneous injection. This drug will be given to you one week and you’ll have to be in clinic for more tests to find out how the ovaries are responding to the drug. They will test to find out if you have produced enough enough follicles and are they of the right size.Depending upon the test results you will be told to have variations in the dosage of the medicine you take depending on how the follicles look.
Stage 3
After having the medicine for few weeks, then there will be a internal ultra-sound scan to measure the number and size of follicles. They will look for follicles around 18mm in size to consider that a mature egg is present. There may be more eggs if all looks good, then there will be a egg retrieval following a scan. There will be a fixed date & time provided for you to take third & final drug HCG or Human Chronic Gonadotrophin injection, which is the day before your surgery.There is a certain time period in which the egg has to be retrieved after the drug is given around 36hours.
Stage 4
The egg collection time!
You will be given a sedative before having the surgery.You will be briefed before giving the sedative, There you can ask questions based on the IVF treatment. A needle is passed through the vagina wall into each ovary with the use of an internal ultra sound probe turn by turn.The ovaries. The ovaries will b are drained by the needle and the fluid examined by an embryologist for eggs. This process is done with the use of ultra-sound scanning equipment without any pain & discomfort.
After this procedure It’s good to take a week off as the egg retrieval and embryo implantation will be done within a week.Some time there will be extreme pain after the embryo transfer.The pain is due to the ovaries being drained and it will be different in different people, some feel extreme pain whereas some of them only feel a slight discomfort only. There can be other symptoms which should look out for to rule our over stimulation of the ovaries which if not treated, could be serious.
Stage 5
It’s Time to collect your embryos.This is also done without any sedation under the guidance of an ultrasound without any pain. The embryos are being inserted into the uterus with a catheter. The embryos jump out as they are pushed out of the catheter. It is quite an experience. This procedure is done in a operating theatre.The last part of IVF treatment involved progesterone. There will be tablets to insert into the vagina twice a day following embryo transefr to maintain thickness of the uters lining which was caused by the FSH injection and which creates the best environment for the embryo.
