A Guide to AdWords Account Access: MCCs, Granting, and Managing Access Levels

If you’re currently managing an AdWords Account or trying to gain access to another person’s AdWords Account, there are a few things Google makes hard to understand with AdWords account access:

  • Who has access to your Google AdWords account
  • What the different management access levels mean
  • How to give employees management access to your AdWords account
  • How to grant access to your AdWords account to an Agency, 3rd Party (like us), or a Consultant
  • How to revoke access from other account managers
  • How to give access to multiple MCC accounts

Let’s quickly walk through how to manage and understand this process.

[New: 9/13/16] Manage Multiple AdWords Accounts Under a Single Email without an MCC

Before September 13th, you could only own 1 AdWords account per email address. So, if you wanted to learn AdWords, you had to open a new account with your email. This was the only account you could own with that email.

Now, you can own and manage up to 5 AdWords accounts under a single email. This makes it easy access all your accounts under a single email. You can also switch between accounts more easily:

How to give a 3rd party access to your AdWords account

  1. From the AdWords dashboard, click the Settings wheel in the upper right-hand corner
  2. Select Account Settings from the drop-down menu
  3. From the left sidebar, select Account access
  4. Click +USERS
  5. Fill out the new user’s information:

  2. [NEW] As of 9/13/16, the invited user does not need to “accept” the invitation (Read More)

*Revoking access follows the same steps, but requires you to click on the Actions drop-down menu, and then choose the desired outcome.

AdWords Account Access Levels explained:

  • Administrative access: Manage all aspects of the account and give people access
  • Standard access: Make changes to campaigns and give people email only access
  • Read only access: View campaigns and run reports.
  • Email only access: Receive account alerts and reports via email.

It is important to note: Email only & Read only access levels cannot grant additional access levels. SO if you cannot access these steps, you need to request a higher access level from the account administrator.

Standard access users can grant Email only access.

Administrators have full control of granting access.

What is My Client Center (MCC)?

My Client Center (MCC) is a type of Google AdWords account that allows you to manage multiple AdWords accounts that are linked to the MCC under a single account. You can think of the MCC as an umbrella account that allows advertisers to manage everything underneath it. MCCs are used by Agencies, Automated Bid Managers, Consultants, Search Engine Marketers, and more.

How to give an MCC (Agency, 3rd Party, Consultant) access to your AdWords account

  1. The MCC holder — AdHawk, for example — will request your 10 digit Customer ID number (XXX-YYY-ZZZZ). This can be found in the upper right hand corner of your AdWords dashboard.
  2. You should get an email notification with this request, but the email only takes you to the AdWords Dashboard.
  3. From the AdWords dashboard, click the Settings wheel in the upper right-hand corner
  4. Select Account Settings from the drop-down menu
  5. From the left sidebar, select Account access
  6. You should see the following menu under Client managers

  1. Simply Accept request and you’re good to go!

*Bonus* You are able to grant multiple MCC’s access to your account. For instance, if you’re working with an Agency and would like to use AdHawk to improve performance and transparency between you and your agency, you can do that!

How to revoke AdWords Access

If you’d like to remove a user from your AdWords account, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Settings Gear Icon in the upper right corner of your AdWords dashboard
  2. Select Account Settings from the drop-down menu
  3. From the left sidebar, select Account access
  4. You should see a list of emails or users with access to your account. Find the email address of the user you would like to remove
  5. Click Actions
  6. Choose Terminate Access to remove users from your AdWords account
