operate with good intuition. There’s simply not enough time, money, or people at a start-up to invest in a bunch of research or data-gathering. Good product and people intuitions are what lead to successful outcomes in the arena of high-risk plays.

I think this is spot-on and something which doesn’t get said enough.

We’re constantly told that we should be data-driven and measure everything, but there’s two problems with that:

  1. Early on, you simply don’t have the volume of data for it to be significantly meaningful.
  2. You don’t know what you don’t know. So how do you decide what to track / measure?

Ultimately you still need good instincts and intuition in deriving any insight from the data you are tracking / measuring and especially so when you want to apply that insight in improving your business.
