The Death Bump

Readers of my father’s (Capt. Don McVicar) aviation adventures might notice he always titled his chapters. Dad told me that he’d come up with a title for the chapter of the book he was writing, “and then I’ll write to it.” When I began writing my own memoirs last year, I followed his advice, and it does help to keep me on course.

But of all the chapters in all nine volumes of his aviation memoirs, “The Death Bump” stands out for me. It’s a chilling title, from North Atlantic Cat, which follows Ferry Command Pilot and South Atlantic Safari chronologically through his wartime service delivering bombers…
