Day trip to Badagry

I’ve always wanted to visit Badagry because of its history as a slave port. That’s one of the best places to go if you want to learn about the old slave trade days…but be prepared to be depressed.

I went with TVP Adventures and didn’t regret a second of it. It was so eye opening though. It’s crazy how being a slave trader was more or less a legal profession! Slaves would be captured and kept in deplorable conditions in the Barracoon. I had so many shivers!!! We took a walk through a flooded plain which was the route of no return; where the slaves were taken to the beach to be loaded onto ships, never to be seen again. Shivers I tell you!

Badagry is also home to one of the most famous monuments in Nigeria — the first story building. It was in surprisingly good condition even though the staircase to the top floor was pretty hair raising!

After our tour, we ended up at the beach about 20 minutes out of town and entertained ourselves with an interesting game of charades!

To be honest, this slave tour will make you wonder at the depths of wickedness of humans. It’s really sad, but a good wake up call about how far we’ve all come.
