John, there are some provoking thoughts in here, but your post is disjointed.

I have been involved in MONSTER (250+ in 3 months) to minuscule, normal hirings, and the way one can approach hiring is so incredibly different dependent on resources to a certain constraint. To utilise your title, with some additional basic resources, orders of magnitude of leverage can be achieved… only for most startups it’s so hard to be in any way an efficient point.

And, with limited resources, how one deals with scaling at each stage of evolution is challenging, with culture, capabilities, individual aspirations etc. If you don’t get things right in one phase, issues compound…
