OnePlus X: Premium looks at a budget price

Oneplus X Onyx :- Specification

In terms of specifications, the OnePlus X is quite similar to the One. It features a 5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) Amoled screen and is powered by a quad-core 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor. It has 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM , 16GB of built-in storage, and also supports storage expansion using a microSD card (up to 128GB). The phone has a 13-megapixel rear camera with flash and a f/2.2 aperture and a 8-megapixel front-facing camera with a f/2.4 aperture.

The smartphone features a metal frame with dual speaker grilles on the bottom panel alongside a regular Micro-USB 2.0 port and 3.5mm audio jack on top panel.

Build and Design:- Lovely to look at, lovely to hold

OnePlus X comes in two variant:- the Onyx and Ceramic versions. Both versions are very much similar in design and specification but the biggest difference is the materials used for built. Sadly Ceramic version is a limited edition.

Our review unit is the Onyx variant, perfectly designed glass bar built, tapered on the corners with metals on the side gives a really premium feel. For some glass body may be a problem as more glass means there’s more to break and putting cover on the phone ruins all its premium feels although company provides matt finished cover in the box itself.

Top Edge with Headphone Jack

OnePlus X weighs 138 grams and is 6.9 mm thick, but more importantly, it’s 5.5 inches tall, about 0.1 inch more than the iPhone 6s which makes it a really compact smartphone that is easy to maneuver and hold.

Back Side of Phone

Display :- Solid Crisp Screen

From what we’ve seen so far, the screen is an another area where OnePlus X scores very heavily.
The 5-inch AMOLED display with 1080p resolution is big enough to enjoy gaming and browsing.Unlike the OnePlus 2, this phone comes with the dark theme from Oxygen OS, by default. Color looks vibrant and sharp. The Onyx variant is black dark theme, the display blends into the bezels on the top and the sides. In addition, Gorilla Glass 3 used on the screen adds to the touch experience and strength.

Front Screen One Plus X

For the first time, OnePlus has gone all out and fitted an AMOLED screen onto their devices. To check the sharpness and clarity we installed high end games and other high resolution images .As expected from an AMOLED display the colors looks sharp due to the true blacks.

Camera:- Fast and Sharp Snapper

OnePlus X is powered with a 13MP camera equipped with ISOCELL technology (light sensitivity is increased for sharper images and less noise) and 0.2 second phase detect auto focus which helps you in taking snappy snaps. The front-facing shooter is powered with 8MP , f/2.4 aperture, and features like Beauty Mode which adds to the quality of the pictures.

Hands on Experience Camera

The camera UI on the OnePlus X is very similar to the one on the OnePlus 2.

The 13 MP primary camera takes good quality photos with fast auto focus in well-lit conditions and has good white balancing as well as color output. Despite the lack of OIS, the images looks quite sharp when taken in normal mode. In the Clear and HDR modes,we do have to hold the phone a bit steady as it take longer to capture but it is still pretty fast and free from blurring.

Image with HDR and well light condition

Due to ISOCELL technology there isn’t much noise if there is proper lighting however when it’s dark, the noise does tend to affect picture quality. However, it is still a winner in this price range.

Image “Clear image” option and backgorund De-focus

The front facing camera is of 8 Megapixel with OmniVision sensor. The quality of the images are quite good with complete detailing and sharpness in well-lit conditions. The downside is that we have to hold the phone steady for longer when taking photos in low light conditions .According to technical experts it is because front facing camera has a smaller aperture of f2.4 as compared to the main camera which has an aperture of f2.2.

Cloudy Atmosphere with HDR image

The video recording on the OnePlus X maxes out at 1080p resolution at 30 fps. But the specs of Snapdragon 801 processor make it possible to record 4K videos easily, hope to get update for 4K recording in future. The 1080p videos captured on the OnePlus X are good in terms of detailing and sharpness but the main drawback is the shaky effect due to lack of OIS.
The feature to record video in slow motion works well, but lack of OIS can give minor dissatisfaction.
Although the overall camera features are appreciable whether it is in video recording, slow video or image capture.
Photos can be taken in 3 aspect ratios. 4:3 mode is the default and the images are captured at 12.4 Megapixel resolution. 16:9 images are captured in 7.9 Megapixel resolution and 1:1 images are captured in 9.3 Megapixel resolution.

Other Features:

1. Oneplus X brings an another interesting feature where you can use one of the two dual-SIM slots for a microSD card, which will be the most popular configuration for most people in India, we’d imagine.

2. The Snapdragon 801 processor is one of the most powerful slice of smartphone silicon available these days, paired with 3GB of RAM, makes it robust to handle everything which Android 5.1 required for optimum performance.

3. The phone has 4G LTE on both the SIM slots however only one SIM can be on 4G at a time while the other will be on 2G.

4. Non Removable battery with 2525 mAh.

PROS

  • Good Build quality.
  • Powerful performance.
  • High resolution display.
  • Lighter and Powerful.

CONS

  • Non-replaceable battery as battery doesn’t perform up to the mark.
  • Body is a fingerprint magnet.
  • No Backlighting for Capacitive Keys.
