In Their Shoes

Meet Andrew Millette

We can all search a school, but how do you know what it’s REALLY like to attend?Admittedly’s In Their Shoes looks at the ins and outs of some of the top universities in the country, from the people who know it best — the students.

Meet Andrew Millette, an Economics major at Boston College. He is originally from Ridgefield, CT and attended Ridgefield High School.

Let’s get to know Andrew:

What’s on your playlist? Taylor Swift.

What’s a book that inspired you? The Brothers Karamazov

Morning person or night owl? Night owl.

What’s your favorite way to take a study break? Study breaks are for the weak.

Favorite late night snack? Nut clusters from Costco.

What are your favorite app/gadget/tools? Snapchat

Favorite travel destination? Paris

Did you have a class that changed the way you think? Why? The honors program at BC consists of small seminar classes that cover philosophy, literature, theology, art, and history, among a few other subjects. My sophomore honors seminar professor is one of the smartest people I have ever met, and he took books of obscure philosophy that are hundreds of years old and made them incredibly applicable to my life. As someone who is much more of a business-minded individual, he made me think about the importance of great romantic and impressionist paintings, not in terms of their artistic value, but in terms of what they can teach about humanity. His lessons often revolved around what the human spirit is and why we should embrace life. I think about his lessons almost every day.

What one piece of advice would you give high school students, or yourself in high school? Study really hard in high school but don’t freak out about what college you go to. The whole process should be about finding somewhere where you feel comfortable and can grow as a person. You don’t have to go to Harvard to accomplish what you want to. You can accomplish a lot more at a school where you feel comfortable enough to take risks and face challenges than somewhere where you feel like you should go.

Top 5 Things You WON’T Read In the Brochure About Your University

1. BC has a strong Catholic community if you want it but it’s not as Catholic as most people think who haven’t gone here. I have a hard time finding people to go to church with me. It’s very accepting of all religions.

2. Our “Superfans” are much less committed to actually going to the games after tailgates compared to most other D-I football schools. We’re champion tailgaters though.

3. The fact that we don’t have Greek life is actually great because it forces people to join clubs and try new things in order to meet people that they wouldn’t do otherwise.

4. This might be in the brochures, but we actually have the best food ever. I had to go off the meal plan because our food is so good that I ate too much of it. We may be the one university in the US that has restaurant quality food.

5. People here are really, really good looking compared to other schools I’ve been to. I‘m not kidding…
