In Their Shoes

Meet Danny Finnegan

We can all search a school, but how do you know what it’s REALLY like to attend?Admittedly’s In Their Shoes looks at the ins and outs of some of the top universities in the country, from the people who know it best — the students.

Meet Danny Finnegan, an English major and Communications minor at Fordham University. Danny is originally from Rockville Centre, NY and attended Chaminade High School.

Let’s get to know Danny:

What’s on your playlist? I’ve been listening to Yo La Tengo’s soundtrack album They Shoot We Score a lot recently, and have also been on a big Parquet Courts binge.

What’s a book that inspired you? The Sense of An Ending by Julian Barnes

Morning person or night owl? Night Owl

What’s your favorite way to take a study break? Whenever I need a study break, I’ll sit and watch a quick episode of John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight.

Favorite late night snack? Linden’s Cookies

What are your favorite app/gadget/tools? I’m incredibly technologically inefficient, but I love that I have an HDMI cord that connects my laptop to my TV, so I don’t have to pay for cable anymore.

I really love my: Family

Favorite travel destination? Alaska

Did you have a class that changed the way you think? Why? My senior year English class had a big impact on the way I write. My teacher, Mr. Ingrassia, was not afraid to mark up my papers, and teach me that concision leads to good writing. We also got to read some Fitzgerald, some Orwell, and we also learned how to write a term paper.

How did you decide what school you were going to go to? I chose Fordham based on my comfortability while walking around campus there. I had always thought I would go to a school far away from home, and actually was planning on attending Tulane University in New Orleans. It wasn’t until I visited Rose Hill in the Bronx, and got a tour of the campus, that I realized how much I would love to go to school here.

Top 5 Things You WON’T Read In the Brochure About Fordham University

1. How involved everyone is on campus. Between the different newspapers, service organizations, and performing arts groups, it seems like by senior year everyone is involved in some sort of way on campus.

2. The Arthur Avenue Market is a great time, filled with all sorts of delis and the Bronx Beer Hall opened in there a year or two ago.

3. How fun the nightlife is here. You often read Fordham is ranked as one of the worst party schools in the country, but I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love spending their weekends packed into the bars, like Mugzs, or in a dimly lit Bronx basement.

4. Not only does Arthur Avenue have great Italian food, but it also has great Mexican food (Estrellita Poblana’s) and great sushi (Umai).

5. How much you’ll grow to love the Bronx by the time you’re a senior. While everyone spends at least their first two years trekking into Manhattan and exploring, eventually you will realize you’re already living in the best borough.
