In Their Shoes: Amit Patel

We can all search a school, but how do you know what it’s REALLY like to attend? Admittedly’s In Their Shoes looks at the ins and outs of some of the top universities in the country, from the people who know it best — the students.

Amit is a first year Pharmacy school student at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. He is originally from Ocala, FL and attended West Port High School.

Let’s get to know Amit:

What’s a book that inspired you? The autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi.

Morning person or night owl? Morning person and proud of it!

What’s your favorite way to take study break? Listening to music, going for a walk, and hanging out with friends.

Favorite late night snack? Oreos.

What are your favorite app/gadget/tools? I love using 8track to listen to music.

I really love my… Google calendar.

Favorite travel destination? London.

Did you have a class that changed the way you think? Why? In high school, I was dual enrolling in a Mass Communication class at my local college. It was one of those 5,000 word semester classes. Since I was not the greatest writer, this class was a huge obstacle for me at the time. Even though the papers were dreadful and annoying, I learned a lot through the class discussions. This class taught me to be involved and invested in my thoughts and ideas, but more importantly to vocalize them. You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if it is never heard or acted on it will remain an idea, which is nothing.

What one piece of advice would you give high school students, or yourself in high school? High school for me was a time where I was academically driven to make the best possible grades. Do not obsess over your grades. Yes grades are important but it is not the only thing that matters. Branch out, get involved early and enjoy your time in high school, because college is not going anywhere. And if you do not get in the university or college of your choice it is not the end of world!
