Batman Vs Super Man : The Snyder — Nolan boundary
“ Event horizon” is the boundary of a super massive object where the gravitational pull becomes so intense that there is no return. Director Zack Snyder just exhibited a similar inescapable pull on his interpretation of DC Universe’s epic duo Batman and Super Man. And here we witness a stark departure from Christopher Nolan’s epic Dark Knight trilogy.
Nolan created an epic not in storytelling but in character building. For the first time we witnessed a Batman that inspired as much fear as awe , matched by demonic figures of evil reflected in Raas-Al-Ghul, Joker and Bane. When we remember Dark Knight , we recall the iconic caped vigilante and the diabolical disposition of its villains.
Snyder, on the other hand, utilizes emotions amalgamated from all characters and circumstances in the movie, as levers for storytelling. Its not the Batman channeling his rage , its the rage driving the Batman. The Super Man torn apart by a world insecure from his insurmountable power, driven by love for his mother to a battle against that rage.
Nolan stares deep into the icons of the epic , pulling aspects of their personality , shattering layers of emotions to awe audience with the core nature of fallible mortality. While Snyder , casts his eyes upon to make us notice the impact on the world , the common man, of the turmoil between good and evil.
The raging Batman calmed by the yearning of Super Man to save his mother. The resurrection of Zod as Doomsday, presented not as another villain , but an apocalyptic force of destruction unleashed upon the world , exploited by Luthor and his thirst to prove himself worthy of extending his father’s legacy. The death of Super Man , symbolizing the stiffing of hope with distrust on what is inherently good , amplified by the teary eyed people of metropolis paying homage to their fallen hero. And the surprise of resurrection , that is not a surprise but a resounding answer to an audience shocked by death, yet sub consciously hoping that good will survive and prevail.
Snyder’s storytelling might have made some unhappy fans, used to stealth and power in persona of their favorite heroes. But this story was about the powerful uncovering their fallacy and vulnerability, embroiled in a battle between acceptance and evolution to greater strength. The appeal of this rendition lies not at the forefront with the icons , but the connect with the unseen thoughts felt in their minds.
