Make Shit
I remember when I started learning web development. It was about 5 years ago and I was eager as fuck to soak in every ounce of data that would enhance my web dev skills. I started learning the very basics. HTML, CSS, Wordpress, and some PHP. All web development concepts were brand new to me so I was just trying to grasp 1% of the knowledge that was circulating around my brain. For every new piece of data that I retained, another avenue of knowledge opened with a million more concepts to try to understand. I told myself to whether the storm and that one day I will be able to understand all that entails web development. So I continued consuming information. From blog posts, newsletters, youtube videos and any other type of tutorial I could get my hands on.
DON’T DO THIS
My Reasoning
I wanted to be successful and I thought reading and watching tutorials would help me gather so much knowledge that eventually I will be able to code out an application straight from my cranium. Unfortunately, all it did was pile up so much useless information in my brain that it started leaking out never to be seen again. The great modern day American Poet, Young Jeezy, once said…
That’s why I forgot more than you’ve ever learned
The truth is that I was lazy to put in the necessary work. What I really needed to do was code. Nothing could have given me more useful knowledge than coding. That is something you don’t hear too often from the millions of web dev articles circulating the interwebs. It is super interesting to learn how to make animated 3d box but its a trillion times more helpful, fun, and rewarding to actually make the animated 3d box.
It took me a while to realize it but I love making shit. Learning is nice and all but making things is where the awesome sauce is at. The more apps I make, the better I will get. Even if the apps I code are not “Software Engineer” quality.
