And here I must make an apology. In these lectures, I am aware that my references are Eurocentric and my examples parochial. It’s not that I think there is no other kind of history; it’s just that we haven’t got all night.

Why apologize? We are talking about European history. What happened in Japan in the time of Henry VIII, had no effect on Tudors. We should think globally when it comes to the ecology, the human impact on the environment. However, bringing globalism in the discussion about early modern and medieval Europe is as useful as forcing an organic farmer in Poland to plant coconuts. It defies the purpose, and it’s a waste of resources and time.
