As a straight white male I think the issue is that we are told our entire lives it’s okay, we didn’t mean it, etc. no matter how poorly we act or what trouble we cause. Now that I’m older, I won’t allow any of it. But it’s scary to me how much freedom I was granted when I was younger. Watching I Am Not Your Negro, going to the National African American museum in DC and reading as much as I can (from Ta-Nehesi to Colson Whitehead), I’m discovering the poison of America and the unrelenting privilege whites receive and refuse to believe they receive. We make victims of ourselves after we’ve created victims. Trump represents the worst of us. I hope he is a wake up call for not just American whites but any whites that benefited from slavery or oppression. There is a better future out there and it bends towards justice. But we can’t be idle.
