Oriental Rug Cleaning

Rug washing is very different from carpet cleaning. Oriental rugs are made with delicate materials such as wool, silk, cotton, etc., so we need to correctly analyze its construction and utilize the appropriate cleaning technique.

We do not use carpet/rug cleaning machines. We provide in-plant rug cleaning by hand-washing for Navajo, Turkish, Afghani, Persian, Oriental, and other hand-woven rugs.

Most carpet/rug cleaners claim to “hand-wash” your rugs but, in fact they use the following machines. We do not recommend these methods:

Rotary Machines

Rotary scrubbing machines (also hot water extractors) — power head equipped with rotary vacuum heads that make HUNDREDS of omnidirectional cleaning passes.

Problems —

  1. Risk of rug pile distortion.
  2. When used for “in-home” rug cleaning — again, not recommended, if the rug does not dry fast enough, the opportunity for mold growth and odor arises.

Rug-Wash Tub

Machine mimics the gentle motion of hand washing using a paddle wheel — tub holds 1,200 gallons of water and can wash up to 15 oriental rugs at a time.

Problems —

  1. Cross Contamination: Rugs with pet urine, moth eggs and other contaminants will contaminate all of the rugs.
  2. Color Bleeding/Transfer- Managing the color run problem is left to a small dye absorbing sheet.

Our Unique In-Plant Rug Washing Process:

Each rug is washed individually (eliminating the risk of cross-contamination), using a soft brush, organic rug shampoo and plenty of clean, cold water.

Important

Never ever allow a wall to wall carpet cleaning company to “clean” an oriental or area rug inside your home. Carpet cleaners offer in-home rug “steam cleaning” which only cleans the surface, leaving fine dirt and micro particles at the foundation.

Also, if the rug does not dry fast enough, after it’s been steam cleaned, the opportunity for mold growth and odor arises.

When a cleaner attempts to clean a rug in the home with a hot water extraction machine (better known as steam cleaning) the top half of the rug in most cases becomes saturated with detergent while the bottom half remains untouched by the detergent. As quickly as the solution is sprayecl onto the rug it is extracted by the machine’s vacuum. This process never really gets the dirt and grit out of the bottom half of the rug’s foundation.

It must also be pointed out that the fringes of the rug cannot be cleaned. So don’t choose the quick, easy and wrong way it will cost you much more in the long run.
