Just food for thought.

I agree.

While the icon is obviously obsolete beyond what was expected, the image itself has really just transcended it’s original intention. It’s really no longer an icon of a floppy and is now an icon of “save”. I feels to me like a visual version of an English word being formed out of something originally in Latin – imagine someone describing it in the future as “this is the Save icon, originating from the image of a floppy disk from early computer systems”.

Those of us aware of what it represents will shrink as those only familiar with what it represents will grow and as long as that happens, whatever it’s an image of becomes somewhat redundant in contrast to what it represents.
