We shouldn’t really be reading books!
Reading a book is putting yourself at the mercy of the author. S/he has full control over whether they want to lead you on and disappoint you, surprise you, horrify you, bore you, build up and not deliver, or even give you the experience of a lifetime.
Some “readers” are addicted to giving themselves up to the mercy of these merchants of words. Some “non-readers” just cannot expose themselves in that manner. That, to me, is the marked change that happened to me when I stopped reading books, or anything for that matter in the long form!
Reading a book is like hearing a monologue that you have no way of interjecting.
The author may pound you with the same thing over and over again, or even keep switching sides all the time — and you just cannot do anything about it! And, if you are in the stranglehold of a seasoned devil, s/he will keep you hooked at it and coming back for more till you finish off at least the current book!
Sometimes though, you are spellbound to a series. Even if they know that they don’t like the way the author is treating them, they feel obligated to read through every single sequel (or sometimes, a prequel) to the story!
Of course, sometimes, an author treats you like a guardian, almost a parent, and with great care and affection, draws you into a warm snuggle and keeps you there! Those are the experiences for which you keep coming back and exposing yourself to their mercy over and over again!
