The Mojave Desert

Although the Mojave Desert (which includes Death Valley) is a staggering 124,000km2, it is just a small part of a much larger North American desert that encompasses the Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Great Basin deserts. It is sometimes called the ‘high desert’ since most of it lies between 600m and 1,200m, although as most people know, Badwater Basin (what a great name) in Death Valley is the lowest elevation in the USA at 86m below sea-level.
