Book Review: Smilee & Company Operation Uno: Van Grumpee’s Gaze (Book 2)

Smilee & Company Operation Uno is an adventure chapter book for young readers. It tells the story of a group of kids who work for an organization dedicated to crime fighting.
One of their more dastardly foes is Bumpee Van Grumpee, a billionaire donut maker, consumed with controlling the world. This time Van Grumpee has created a glaze for his donuts that turns kids into Bullees and only Smilee & Company can stop him.
Bullies don’t appear out of thin air, something makes them that way. The reader discovers why Van Grumpee is the way he is. I think this backstory teaches children a valuable lesson. Sometimes the bullied become the bully. Just because someone mistreats you, it doesn’t give you the right to hurt others. Anger can sometimes make us think we can justify our actions. It doesn’t.
Smilee & company is an excellent book for all young readers. It has action and adventure, yet with little tidbits of information to feed the eager mind. I thoroughly enjoyed the humor which us children of all ages will appreciate. I actually laughed out loud a few times.
The characters are loud and vibrant. The dialogue matches their over the top characters, which are diverse and unique. The plot is fast paced and immediately engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and know children everywhere will love it.

Sean Thomas was born in Los Angeles and raised in Inglewood, California. He is the author of the memoir entitled, “The Avocado Tree” and the creative mind behind the anti-bullying children’s book series, “Smilee & Company.” Sean holds a Bachelor’s of Information Technology and resides in Oklahoma City with his family, where he is penning a series of forthcoming books.
