Did you deliberately fail to read the second part of the statement you quoted?

Setting aside the fact that any use of that scripture that is not immediately followed with something like “but I will only be with you for a short time” is severely out of biblical context, the representative did take that quote and add an explanation and justification of Jesus’s statement that Jesus did not provide. The representative used this argument to argue that any effort by government to make poor people less poor is a waste of time and resources as “there will always be poor”.

Jesus said “the poor will always be with you”. He did not say “because they wish to be poor”. He did not say “because they don’t make sound financial decisions”. And he certainly did not say “and thus your government should leave them to their suffering”
