This is the thought that I’ve had throughout this entire article.

I, as a young black boy, did in fact have a role model who was a woman (Xena: warrior princess was probably my favorite show). I recall that without too many problems at the time.

What I do not recall, however is incessant hand-wringing about “political correctness” and “losing relatable characters for males” as though every other show at the time did not have a relatable male lead. That looks to be new.

So men and boys have, I think, always been able to enjoy having female role models, or at the very least female leads (rare though it is). What I think has changed is how upset some in society get when it occurs.
