To suggest that Black people have squandered anything is to suggest that
1. They didn’t work far beyond the point of reasonable human effort to receive what white colonials and their descendants received as a simple right.
2. It’s reasonable expect anyone to gain, hold, and increase wealth in a country that wants you impoverished so strongly that it will even commit repeated acts of socio-economic self-mutilation to accomplish that goal.
It’s easy to say “well, look what was given” if you ignore “look at what you had to survive to get it” and “look how hard we tried to take it away”.
Now, I do not suggest that reparations as a large cash sum alone would solve the problem. But that’s not to say reparations cannot or must not be provided. It simply means those due payments should applied in a way that elevates people to where they should be had the United States actually paid its debts.
