Taken in the East Lake Sammamish Trail in Issaquah, Washington (2020)

I go out and I see a nation I barely recognize

Where people has forgotten to empathize

Divided, not united ; Love lost and just pure hatred

The media is distrusted, health workers mistreated

The unemployed asking for their “handout”

The rich getting richer — what the hell is that about?

-

This nation, I question — did I truly know?

Only been here a few years — so maybe that’s a no

I dream of equality, in a country that claims to be free

founded by immigrants dreaming, fleeing, asking for their plea

-

Mothers and fathers making decisions they don’t want

Little kids seek their friends throwing stones at the pond

Teens stuck at homes, they dream, aspire to be viral

while nurses and doctors know a different meaning of viral

-

More and more people drowning in poverty

Inevitable, inescapable like Newton’s law of gravity

Peace and kindness these days seem like a rarity

I cough, and sniffed, do I have it or is this anxiety?

-

Some strongly believe that there’s unreasonable fear

in a sickness that pose a threat to people we hold dear

Is it paranoia or is it proactive protection?

Is it recklessness or is it mindless submission?

Are we truly free? — people with masks they question

Can we truly breathe? Black people ask in suspicion

People in blue, accused of excessive force

When there’s video proof, you create not peace but wars

Confederate statues were taken down

To some, it’s nothing but a symbol of treason

While others shout — “history is in revision!”

World leaders are asked, “where is your vision?”

“Are we forever stuck in our homes — our prison?”

Peaceful protesters mixed with the violent few

But truth is, most are just confused, battered like me and you

-

I go out and I see a nation I barely recognize

Will we ever re-learn to listen and empathize?
