One possible rule of thumb to consider: even if you’re going to build out on one platform, imagine how your app might work on top of at least one or two other platforms. If you can make a good story about how you’d operate on top of at least two other platforms, you’re probably on the right road to independence. If you can’t, you might be in trouble.

This also would help avoid the “temporary deficiency” problem.
