Everybody had a glazed look in their eyes. Law was a boring topic to most. Andre was attentive. Legal precedent, the creation of an entire legal system, and the sheer fact that all this revolved around a piece of paper signed by men long gone. This was the work of people who knew exactly what a legacy was. Power in its most eternal form.

Class was still starting for the year, foundational knowledge was being shared. Still, Andre wondered if there was a better way to teach it. People who ignored or did not know this stuff were the people who would only get so far in the profession. After all, executives have to speak to lawyers more often than they care to admit.

“what do the numbers with the asterisks mean?” A student inquired.

“well, they are page numbers for different books. If you turn the page..” he began explaining the page number system.

Andre watched the spark of curiosity disappear without any fanfare. He had to give credit to his classmates. They were trying to engage their professor. Observing the results of his professors lullaby he saw why so few pursued the world of upper level politics within the realm of education. The work was tedious. Law was the kind of world that rewarded those that paid attention to detail. Nuance was the name of the game. Many mistook that as being for the nerds. Andre knew it was more for the troublemakers.

“looks like we covered everything we needed to. You may go home early.” Mercy, the class collectively awoke to pack their bags. Andre approached Griffin.

“you made it!” he teased her.

“yeah, just don’t appreciate going over page numbers.” He winced, perhaps part of the lesson were overanalyzed.

His phone vibrated with a text from his mentor. The political side of the education world was moving. The boring world of pages and theories was coming alive again for him.
