I’m very curios as to why you think this device would be X86? I’ll give you the backwards compatibility but that may be a downside. My reasons why an ARM based chip made by Apple makes way more sense:

  • Apple likes to control the whole stack
  • They are making kick ass chips for iOS
  • Intel can’t make low powered chips well
  • The switch to ARM would force Mac devs to update their apps not only for ARM but for the new Desktop/Touch experience
  • If they went with X86, you’d need iOS devs to port their apps to X86. (iOS being the more important market)

I like this idea but if this device does happen, I doubt there will be an X86 chip inside.

Edit: Also iOS apps UI’s are made with a more modern UIKit where as the Mac uses something else (I forget what) This would be another reason why switching over to ARM would be a good idea. Unify on the more modern.
