Fair point about conflating Kanye’s career at points. The larger point is that his career is “well engineered” because he was able to leverage his copyright into making most of his money in other ways (fashion, shows, etc.), which is uniquely enabled by the internet and being able to reach fans wherever they are.
I also wouldn’t consider the piece “anti copyright”, but merely pointing out that Spotify’s success as a business depends on gaining some sort of leverage to devalue the copyrights that labels hold. From the consumer’s perspective, it’ll be interesting to watch play out (e.g. I’ve heard Spotify advertising on a lot of podcasts I listen to recently – a great way for Spotify to expand margins is to have users spend less of the time in the app listening to material that’s under copyright).
