Auntie Toke’s dreams for your 20s
Earlier this week, popular Lagos radio personality and TV host Toke Makinwa lit Nigeria social media space on fire (or herself) with a video (Nada! I am not sharing).
Filled with hedonistic charade and filth called advise for young people. Auntie said young people in your twenties (20 to 24-years-old) you should enjoy life and develop yourselves by getting tattoos, piercing your body parts, gate-crashing parties, kissing strangers and also having one night stands with them. You should only think about working and “getting paid” at 25…
Dear young people. While I am not your “counter-auntie” adviser. There are better things you can do in your 20s:
Learn. Open your mind to learning and keep learning. Be an ardent reader. Read anything and everything — trade, art, health, science, politics. Apply for internship or apprenticeship and gain useful experience.
Volunteer. Join causes you find fascinating and contribute to them, the experience is invaluable. You ‘ll be better off than kissing strangers.
Travel. Leave your immediate environment and explore the world. You will get a different perspective of life and be a step ahead of most of your peers.
Try entrepreneurship even if it’s petty business. If you fail, it’s better to fail early. Experiment with many ideas as possible.
Meet people and build network of contacts. This will come handy in your future endeavours. The story of a self made millionaire is one of the biggest lies in history.
Listen to failures and learn from their failures, be obsessed with success and successful people.
Most importantly dream, don’t listen to naysayers and act with confidence. Embrace your flaws and shine through them. Shut out conventional wisdom and general advice from aunties.
