Before starting, I would like to tell you a story of my childhood and you can relate how great marketing was involved in that.

I am a bong from Kolkata, West Bengal. So if you are not aware, it’s a place where almost everyone is a foodie. We spent hours preparing a single meal of daytime called “Lunch” or “Bhaat” as we say.

So, we have a famous dish in Bengal called “Jhalmuri” which is basically puffed rice with all different types of spices mixed.

Jhalmuri and its different funnels

Now why I am dragging a food item while describing a “Marketing Funnel”.

When I was in school, there was a very famous jhalmuri vendor who used to run his stall outside my school.

Now, initially, whenever someone used to approach him (Not for buying purposes) but just to get out of the school by his side, Kaku used to offer the cheapest product he has which was “Fried Grams with spices mixed” where he was adding flavours/masala like onion, green chilli, pickle, lemon and all other roasted spices available with him.

Cold Approach in Marketing

So he used to pitch this product saying “Get this tasty and healthy snack which will kill the hunger of your kid for a small trip”. If you get this your kid will not ask for any unhealthy options like Ice-cream/Chips after school on the way home.

Now, think about it. Parents are concerned about their child and the vendor actually targeted their pain points & stated the benefits at the same time.

Kaku also had “Peanuts chat” which was another cheapest and healthiest option for kids. So, he used to pitch only two products to get this initial sale for a particular customer.

Now, what happened when someone used to buy any of his initial products?

Kaku would give him a free plate (A very small paper plate) to taste & he would make it very tasty on purpose. This gesture is sweet and hits the emotion of the buyer at the same time.

So, what will you think if you get something good for free that too when you are already sold unexpectedly?

You would surely think “Wow! I am getting so much at this price” plus the salesperson is so sweet and cares about me.

Emotions in Marketing

Well! It’s not the case.

Samu Kaka was sweet but he was a better “Business Man”. He used to understand human emotions very well.

Whenever someone used to complete his first purchase, he would offer a more fulfilling snack which is, of course, costlier called “Chotpoti”. It’s basically a mixture of all most evening snacks people eat with their evening tea.

The last and costliest item Shamu kaka used to sell was “Jhalmuri” which he used to charge more than normal vendors. But needless to say, I have always seen people buying more “Jhalmuri” packets from him as compared to other vendors.

Now, I want you to stop for a minute and read out the below marketing jargon we use with this local business.

Focus on the prospect

Lead Collection: He had cold leads (Whom he used to approach using the sales pitch), He had warm leads who might have refused to buy his products after asking the price of “Jhalmuri” and he had “Hot Leads” who used to buy from him regularly

Bonus Product: Spiced Gram/Peanut chat in the small paper plate

Front End Product: Spiced Gram/Peanut chat in a very nominal amount

Upgraded Product 1: Chotpoti

Upgraded Product 2: Jhalmuri

Also, not to forget his famous sales pitch was his “Copywriting Skill”

So, if you ask me was he aware of all this marketing jargon back then? No!

But he was using it and that’s what every successful business does.

So, hop on! And learn to improve your skill in 2021. Learn more with Skill basil
