Afghan Life in Mashhad
Nearly 300,000 Afghans reside in the eastern Iranian metropolis of Mashhad, the country’s second-largest city. They have been migrating there since the Soviet-Afghan war and live mostly in the Golshahr and Tollab neighborhoods. Mashhad is a hub for cross-border trade between Iran and Afghanistan. Every Friday, Afghan men congregate at the local bird market to enjoy their day off work.
