Recently, Instagram released Instagram Stories — and the social media world was all a-buzz!
Now, I must admit, Snapchat did need some competition, but my immediate reaction was: “Oh no! Will my audience expect more from me? Because I hate live streaming!”
Hate may be a pretty strong word to express my dislike for live streaming. It’s a shame, really, because live streaming is quite powerful and fun! I mean, you get the chance to see someone’s life from their perspective — what’s not to love?
Honestly though, live streaming is a waste of my time and here’s why.
When I live steam it simply seems like a way to distract myself from productive things that actually put money in the bank. Although it’s fun, it doesn’t help my business grow.
Wait a second, you say, but you’re showing your personality to people who will get to know, like and trust you! Yes, that’s a key part of marketing, but on the flip side, you have to know your audience!
Is someone really going to buy my course or choose to work with me because I live streamed my road trip to Orlando and talked about the benefits of travel? I don’t think so! (But if you are, go ahead and prove me wrong by clicking here). I have a new client who didn’t even know I had a blog…how’s that for a sale?
There’s not enough time in the day to watch everyone’s live stream
This is my biggest pet peeve! I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time in my day to sit around watching people stream the random fun ongoing in their lives. My life is very intentional. If I want to spend time with someone — I will. I don’t need to watch them. If I need valuable information on getting started with Pinterest or making the most of Twitter, I will watch a webinar.
It doesn’t give you evergreen content
In the moment content is awesome, but if you’re serious about growing your business, you should be creating evergreen content that can be returned to again and again and again. That kind of inbound marketing gets more eyes on your work and gives people a reason to not only keep coming back for more value but share what you’ve already created!
When you live stream, you’re missing out on that long term value. Although you could say the opposite and argue that SnapChat and Instagram Stories give you the ability to create short-term content that gives followers the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) feeling.
That being said, the fact that Instagram adopted SnapChats features is a pretty cool competitive business move. I’ve found SnapChat hard to use, difficult to find people, and the interface is awful. They have been making improvements.
