The South-African heartthrob taking over the world!
Thuso Mbedu is a South-African actress making waves in Hollywood, but her journey has not been an easy one. She’s an orphan, whose mother died of a brain tumor when she was 4. She didn’t have a relationship with her father who passed away when she was 21. She grew up with her grandmother, a pensioner and a former school principal, who also passed away in 2012. Her sister and niece, Noma and Zen, are the center of her world and have her heart.
She is hilarious, has an awesome personality and great sense of humor and these are among the many reasons why we love her. You should check out her Instagram stories and the old videos on her YouTube channel. I really can’t wait to see her act in a comedic show, I have no doubt she will absolutely nail it! She loves to dance and is quite the dancer too, back in the day she had the ‘Teach Me How To (TMHT)’ segments on her YouTube where she posted choreographed dance performances with her friends and other content. She is quite the sneaker head too, soo much so that Ellen DeGeneres gifted her a cool pair of sneakers when she was a guest on the show.
She discovered drama in grade 10 and has worked extremely hard since then, fighting against all odds including contemplating suicide, defying family and squatting from friend to friend to live her passion at a point in her life to achieve her success. She has always been a phenomenal actress and was nominated for the international Emmys twice, in 2017 and 2018 before her performance as Cora in The Underground Railroad disrupted Hollywood. She went on to be nominated for several awards, and won the Best female performance in a new scripted series at the Independent Spirit Awards in 2022, Outstanding performance in new series at the Gotham Awards in 2021 and TV breakout star at the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards. She also appeared in the Forbes Africa 30 under 30 in 2018.
Thuso is a cast member of the yet to be released project, The Woman King, which features heavyweights like Viola Davis, John Boyega and Angelique Kidjo. She has talked about aspiring to produce her own series and movies for years and we are glad to see her dreams come true. She recently struck a deal with Paramount + to develop shows focused on social causes. We absolutely adore her and wish her all the best going forward.
