As a foreign born Black woman in tech for last 25 years I actually appreciated the #GoogleManifesto. Not because I agree with it at all, but because it reflects what many actually think in Silicon Valley and it was great for once that someone actually had the honesty to say out loud what so many are thinking anyway.
As a Black woman in tech, no matter how talented, I have never been treated with the respect that I deserve, that I have earned. But this crosses ideological lines. The “diversity” folks look at me as beneath them and want to raise me up. The non “diversity” folks don’t think I will ever be at their level. Either way, I am not seen as an equal. So really, rather than the patronizing “we will help you” diversity lingo that stops at empty promises, I prefer the blunt, I won’t waste time on you language.
We need to have an honest discussion about diversity in tech. By shutting down (firing) anyone who expresses a different view, Google does us a great disservice.
