Georgia City

The largest state east of the Mississippi River, Georgia is a perfect introduction of everything the South has to offer. Georgia is a state of many contrasts, which makes it an especially appealing place to go. The attractions of Georgia ranges from its mountain landscapes and natural features to the romantic antebellum squares of Savannah and the dazzling modern architecture of Atlanta. There are many things to do in Georgia for the whole family. A trip to Georgia affords tourists the chance to experience stunning natural views, pristine wilderness and places with incredible cultural significance

Plan your visit with this list of the top attractions in Georgia:

· Savannah Historic Desert

Savannah draws millions of tourists every year to its charming scenes of Victorian architecture, cobbled streets, moss-draped oaks and leisurely pace. Lying on the Atlantic Coast in eastern Georgia, Savannah is the state’s oldest city, rich in history, hospitality and natural beauty. A walk around the Historic District’s cobbled streets allows views and tours of beautiful old mansions and historic sites. It also includes lovely parks, huge oak trees, Victorian homes and important memorials.

· Georgia Aquarium

The world’s largest aquarium, Georgia Aquarium houses more than 100,000 aquatic animals in more than 10 million gallons of fresh and saltwater. Because of its vast size, the exhibits are divided into various themes to make visits more focused and educational. Cold Water Quest explores cold water life across the world’s oceans, with unusual creatures that include Australian sea dragons and Japanese spider crabs. The largest, the 6.3-million-gallon Ocean Voyager, houses whale sharks and manta rays among its thousands of fish and features a 100-foot-long acrylic tunnel for visitors to walk through, surrounded by swimming fish.

· Atlanta Botanic Garden

The 30-acre botanical garden next to Piedmont Park comes as a surprise, right in Midtown Atlanta. This four-season attraction always has something in bloom, from its spring bulb display through the colorful autumn foliage. The Fuqua Orchid Center displays orchids of all shapes and colors. Outside are an Edible Garden and Outdoor Kitchen, where fruits and vegetables are grown as landscape plants. The Rose Garden is at its height in late spring and again in late summer, and the Hydrangea Collection is one of the finest in the Southeast, as is the collection of water plants. The Japanese Garden features a teahouse, waterfall, pond, bamboo, dwarf Japanese maples, and a Moon Gate that provides a photo-worthy frame for the beds of bright annuals outside.

· Stone Mountain Park

Stone Mountain Park boasts the quartz monzonite dome monadnock called Stone Mountain. The bas-relief on the mountain’s north face is the biggest in the world. The top rises 825 feet (251 meters) above the surrounding area and provides a beautiful view of Atlanta. The nearby museum Confederate Hall has information about the mountain’s geology. There is also the Antebellum Plantation and Farmyard, which is an open air museum complete with farm animals that visitors can pet and 19 historic buildings meant to depict a pre-Civil War plantation.

· Chattahoochee National Forest

Forming the border between Alabama and Georgia, the Chattahoochee River is a central waterway in Georgia, and its shores and waters provide much entertainment for visitors. The Chattahoochee National Forest covers almost 750,000 acres in northern Georgia. This scenic area, with lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, is a great place for outdoor pursuits or soaking up nature. During the summer months this is a popular area for camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, picnicking, and more.

· Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1937 on 401,880 acres of land, the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is a wild, beautiful place, a breeding ground, and a refuge for migratory birds as well as other wildlife. At its core is the unique Okefenokee Swamp. The refuge is known the world over for its population of amphibians. As it is one of the largest intact freshwater ecosystems in the world, the RAMSAR Convention has declared the refuge a Wetland of International Importance. The peaceful, lush environment is popular for fishing, hunting, hiking, boating, and canoeing.

· Providence Canyon State Park

Providence Canyon State Park is located on 1,003 acres near Lumpkin in southwest Georgia. At the core of this fascinating park is Providence Canyon, which is known as Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon” and is considered one of the Natural Wonders of Georgia. What is curious is that the Canyon is actually not natural — soil erosion.

· St. Simons Island

St. Simons Island, just off the Georgia’s coast, is one of the Golden Isles. It is famous for its natural beaches and marshlands, abundant wildlife, historic sites and monuments, parks, fishing, and watersports. The island is surrounded by historic Southern Oaks that are hundreds of years old and draped in Spanish Moss.

· Red Top Mountain State Park

Named for the soil’s rich red color caused by high iron-ore content, Red Top Mountain was once an important mining area. Today this area is home to the popular Red Top Mountain State Park. The park is a playground for those who enjoy watersports of all kinds.

· Toccoa Waterfalls

The Toccoa water fall is situated on the campus of Toccoa Falls College, not far from Toccoa in the magnificent North Georgia Mountains. From the cottage, there is a scenic path that leads to the natural gorge where the falls can be observed. The falls are 186 feet high — about nineteen feet higher than Niagara Falls, and the Toccoa Falls waterfall is one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in this part of the country.
