I know about the IKEA principle, but I’ve never thought to implement it into UX. It explains why me not being a social network guy, uses one specific one because I spent so much time customizing it to perfectly fit me. Same thing can be said about user avatars in online services and games. Specifically games become more valuable to me once I’ve spent upwards of a half an hour tweaking my character to perfection.
