With the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple unveiled numerous awesome new capabilities, but keep in mind that some of these functions have been available on Android handsets for quite some time.

Each autumn, Apple introduces a new batch of iPhone models. Moreover, the business presents each new function it adds to the iPhone as ground-breaking technology with each new version.

On sometimes, though, that is not the case. In actuality, there are a number of capabilities in the iPhone 14 Pro that many Android phones have had for a while. Let’s take a look at certain iPhone 14 Pro features that we originally saw on Android.

1. Always-On Display

The always-on display (AOD), which enables iPhone users to quickly check the clock and other alerts, is finally available on the iPhone 14 Pro. Although the Samsung Galaxy S7 introduced this capability to Android phones for the first time in 2016, the technology existed far earlier.

The Nokia 6303 was the first phone to include the always-on Display in 2008. Additionally, all of the company’s Symbian OS-powered smartphones, including the Nokia N8, that came with AMOLED screens also have AOD. However, the ability to reduce the screen refresh rate to as low as 1Hz distinguishes Apple’s version of the AOD from other devices.

By doing this, even if the whole AOD is active, the iPhone 14 Pro’s battery life is not adversely affected.

2. 48MP Main Camera

The iPhone’s primary camera last received a resolution boost in 2015, when the iPhone 6S received a 12MP sensor in place of the iPhone 6’s 8MP sensor. Imaginary, huh?

It would have been good if Apple regularly increased the number of megapixels in its cameras, like Android manufacturers do. Sensor resolution isn’t the end-all and be-all of camera quality because computational photography and sensor size are also significant factors for smartphone cameras.

After all, smartphones with 108 MP sensors, such as the premium Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and the midrange Realme 8 Pro, both launched in 2021. It’s also smaller than the enormous 50.3 MP camera on the Xiaomi 12S extreme, which has a 1-inch sensor with 1.6-m pixels despite the Apple iPhone Pro’s 2.44-m quad pixel size, which is comparable to 1.22-m pixels before binning.

It has been suggested that Apple’s Photonic Engine will be the deciding factor. However, other manufacturers, including Samsung, Google, and Xiaomi, are advancing their computational photography technology as well, producing breathtaking photographs with their top-tier smartphones — even in the same low-light circumstances.

3. Autofocusing Front Camera

In the majority of smartphones, the front-facing selfie camera lacks focusing. This is due to the fact that the intricate gear needed for focus control cannot be installed in the little space reserved for front cameras. Android users have previously benefited from this function for a number of years, despite Apple eventually introducing it with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.

4. Action Mode

Apple also launched Action mode for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro in addition to the front camera’s autofocus feature. Although we are unsure of the specific mechanics of this function, it undoubtedly makes use of both optical and digital image stabilization to maintain a stable recording even when filming in unsteady circumstances.

5. Crash Detection

Apple has recently prioritized health and safety greatly. The business is integrating accident detection into the most recent generation of iPhones in addition to the health and safety features it released in the Apple Watch and the Emergency SOS through satellite communication on the iPhone 14.

However, the OnStar Guardian app was previously released in 2021 by the General Motors subsidiary OnStar, which offers customers access to vehicle services including navigation and security. This software, which is available for both iOS and Android, uses your phone’s internal sensors to detect accidents and instantly dials 911.

Even the 2020-released Pixel 4a has automobile collision detection built in. Android smartphones also include microphones and barometers, despite Apple’s claims that it added a high-g accelerometer to detect abrupt changes in speed and direction.

6. A 4nm Processor

The iPhone 14 Pro’s A16 Bionic CPU, according to Apple, is the most powerful smartphone processor ever. Apple merely stated it was 40% quicker than the competition, yet the chart that accompanied the claim had no more information save the fact that it performed better than the A13 Bionic from 2019. We are unsure of how much superior it is to the A15 chip from the previous year.

The 4nm process, according to the manufacturer, is what gave the A16 chip its strength and efficiency. But this method is already employed by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which is present in the Galaxy S22 line and several other Android flagships that will be available in 2022.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+, an upgraded version of this top-tier chip, and the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, an upper mid-range variant, were both announced by Qualcomm in May 2022 utilizing the same 4nm manufacturing process.

Apple may say that the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the quickest smartphone ever, but until we get our hands on real retail models, we’ll need to test them to verify this.

The iPhone 14 Pro Isn’t as Revolutionary as Apple Claims.

Apple (and many other businesses) are excellent at marketing their products, thus during their presentations, they can make features that have been present on Android smartphones look novel and revolutionary. After all, it employs the top advertising companies and invests millions of dollars in its international marketing campaigns.

While Emergency SOS via satellite and the Dynamic Island are some of Apple’s exciting new features for the iPhone 14 Pro, the majority of them are just advancements of earlier and already-existing technologies.
However, even though these technologies have been accessible on Android for years, Apple implements them in a refined manner that makes them appear novel and exciting — at least to Apple users.
