It is important to learn and practice a good brief pitch. Sometimes all you have is a couple minutes to really get your purpose across and be remembered.

Pitch Script

  • Introduce Yourself and Presentation Situation: Hello Co-op board and administrators, my name is Amber and I work in the front end here at the Co-Op. Thank you for giving me time to speak at the monthly board meeting today.
  • Get Attention: You all shop regularly here. Many of you I see almost every day. Imagine that you have stopped in after work to grab a few things, nothing major, just some things for dinner and a bottle of milk. Today you forgot your bags and have to use one of ours. You don’t want to be wasteful so you use a single bag because the only thing heavy you got was your glass-bottle Dahl’s milk. You carry the sturdy looking bag by the handles and on your way to your car, one handle rips down the side of the paper bag, spills your groceries and shatters your Dahl’s milk jug in the parking lot. This happens a lot.
  • Explain Offer and Value Proposition: The Co-op is losing money and creating waste by having handles on the bags. The bag handles are flimsy and they break, but because they are on the bag, people naturally use them instead of supporting the bottom of the bag. So many bags are getting broken causing wasted bags and broken and spilled groceries, and the bags almost always need to be doubled which causes money losses and environmental waste. I recommend that we start purchasing grocery bags without handles.
  • Describe Benefits; Counter Objections: I realize that handles make the bags easier to carry and are different from other local grocers, but double bagging every bag of groceries or the risk of having to replace and cleanup broken items does not follow our Co-Op commitment to our owners, community, and the environment.
  • Call to Action: I am here today to ask the board and administration to reduce waste and save money that will effect owner rebates, employee bonuses, and our reputation in the community by investing in new grocery bags with no handles.
