Will AI take my job? Hope so!

I strongly doubt the creation of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence, human-level AI), but it is probably due to the limitations of my imagination, science has surprised us many times. Nevertheless, it amuses me a little that we attribute to AI human motivations and sins (lust for power over the world, the need to gain status and wealth, or even will to make slaves of us). Although “ordinary AI” is already changing our world, including the labor market, irrevocably.

As a copywriter who has been trying to write something meaningful with Chat GPT (and competing tools) for several weeks, I am calm about my job (for several years). Yes, AI at this stage is suitable for simple, generative texts on lifestyle issues for SEO, but it does not have the ability to combine various information and draw conclusions, and it does not provide interesting insights on expert / technical issues. In the case of specialized topics, it defines the unknown by the unknown and misleading.

So far, in my opinion, it’s like Canva Premium. Lots of functionality, and you can do many things yourself thanks to ready templates, but you still need a professional for the advanced ones. And if you want to create something unique but don’t have the talent (and know-how), it’s going to come out poop anyway (I tried).

I think that over time these tools will get better and better and then they will reduce the need to use specialists, and for the best ones, they will be valuable support. Both in the office and on the construction site.

So, the question is: will automation (and let’s not forget about this technology!) and AI take our jobs? Yes, a large part for sure (just like production automation has reduced the number of employees in factories), because it simply pays off. And money rules business.

I can hear your thoughts: How can you hope AI will take your job? This title is probably clickbait, admit it!

Sure it is, the range won’t do itself! ;-)

Of course, I hope it will take away what I don’t like (e.g. bug fixes, which Grammarly supports me in real-time as I’m writing this text) and leave more space for creative and conceptual work. Daydreams? A little bit. If new solutions to old problems arise, new problems will arise, after all, this is how it has always been. I’m sure the change will be painful, but I know one thing — what doesn’t pay off is taking offense at technology. An artist can criticize streaming platforms for dropping CD sales or think about how to monetize his/her work in a new channel.

My grandmother was a draftswoman (forgotten profession “kreślarka” in Polish), today this role does not exist, because we have the AutoCAD program. Have architects ceased to exist? No. I think that will be the case with the rest of the professions, some will disappear and others will require new skills. So ask yourself, are you a drafts(wo)man or an architect? Not everyone can be an architect, there will be no such demand — you will say. Yes, it won’t. And that’s a challenge.

Not every one will work in the future. There will be a huge problem with the distribution of wealth, a widening gap between the rich and the poor. There will be mental problems. In our civilization, the work ethos is strong, work is the meaning of life, and the profession defines us. So what we will do with those who do not work? With all that free time? Will we create a new civilization not based on trade? I don’t have an answer, there are smarter specialists for such things.

Maybe AI can help? When (If) it will be smarter than humans, maybe it will find a solution that doesn’t create new problems. Well, I guess I’m starting to write sci-fi, so I’ll stop here.
