PROLOGUE
On Sunday, July 28, Brother X was comfortably settled in a dormitory room at the University of Ioannina. He had arrived the day before in Ioannina by bus from Igoumenitsa. The bus trip had taken about one and one-half hours, versus the two and one-half hours he had expected. Upon arrival in Igoumenitsa harbor via the Europalink ferry, he had noted the presence of the Grimaldi Lines Zeus Palace ro-ro ferry, which had been docked in Ancona the previous day. Igoumenitsa’s harbor was the typical concrete affair with a huge parking lot to cross upon exiting the ferry. The arrivals and departures building resembled both architecturally and service-wise an airport departures’ lounge combined with a small shopping mall, with various duty-free goods on offer, restaurant, ticketing facilities, plus cabs waiting outside. As the Europalink was emptying of passengers, cars, and trucks, Brother X got a very good look…
