Square Books Jr., a bookstore geared toward Oxford’s youth, offers a vastly different selection of reading material than its neighboring bookstores, Square Books and Off Square Books.
On Sunday, October 9th, Square Books Jr. had a special sale where select books and magazines were under $10.
Square Books Jr. has a large selection of reading material that is marketed towards beginner readers all the way to teenagers.
Nine year old Andrew Miller says that Square Books Jr. is his favorite place to go on the Oxford Square. He says that every time he visits the bookstore with his family, he finds a new adventure book that he wants to read.
Square Books Jr. has a plethora of genres to choose from, whether it be fiction, non-fiction, educational, or historical.
Four year old Ella Marie said she loves to look at books with pictures in them. Square Books Jr. has a selection of books for children of young ages that are just starting out on their literary journey.
Aside from reading material, Square Books Jr. sells art supplies, costumes, and children toys. Bookstore employee Allie Reid says that the toys and games sell just as much as the books.
Ella Marie was one of many kids to make their way over to play with Square Books Jr.’s toys.
In a little section in the bookstore resides a toy kitchen for kids to play with if they wish.
Square Books Jr. has a large selection for older kids, as well. Due to the Harry Potter series wild popularity, an entire section is labelled for the books. Under the Harry Potter books reside other fiction books for middle grade children.
Dotted around the bookstore are various semi- secluded spots for reading books. The bookstore walls are covered in posters and artwork that add to the overall store aesthetic.
During the Sunday sale, children’s books along with chapter books were marked at lower prices.
In addition to the toy kitchen, Square Books Jr. has a station for building blocks, where Ella Marie enjoyed spending her time during the Sunday sale.
As the Sunday sale came to a close, the store emptied of people- yet the store remains filled with the smattering of book shelves and eclectic decorations.
Square Books Jr. closes its doors at 5 p.m. every Sunday but opens them on 9 a.m. on Monday.
