The term “agvocate” means different things to different people. For us it’s a term to quickly encapsulate all of the positive intents of people actively speaking up for the agriculture industry; a simple way to build a community of like-minded, passionate people.
Our choice to embrace using the term was the result of many conversations among our team here and we love it. To us, an agvocate:
- uses facts and personal experiences to dispel myths and misperceptions about the ag industry;
- acknowledges the challenges in ag, but focuses on the positive side of the industry;
- wears their passion for ag on their sleeve and looks for ways to share it with the world;
- speaks up, speaks positively and, most importantly, speaks first — an agvocate looks for opportunities to create conversations as opposed to always responding to others; and
- is inclusive and respectful — an agvocate looks to find common ground and build lines of communication, not draw lines in the sand.
But whether you love the term or not, it’s important to not get hung up on it. We need to concentrate on the real goal: our industry being a trusted voice that can help shape people’s relationship with agriculture and food in positive, realistic and engaging ways. Because at the end of the day, it truly isn’t the word that matters. It’s about all of us working together to tell Canada, and the world, about our wonderful industry.
