Atomic Habits by James Clear is a bestselling self-help book that delves into the science and psychology of habits. He introduces the concept of “atomic habits,” which are tiny, fundamental behaviours that compound to create significant outcomes. Clear provides practical strategies for building good habits, breaking bad ones, and mastering the tiny behaviours that lead to remarkable results.

This concept of atomic habits that compound into one large habit is largely fascinating, but also very much true. For example, when you study every day, that studying compounds into preparation for exams. Similarly, I’ve been trying to compound a few habits; mainly exercising, eating my pills and doing my skincare routine consistently.

Plateau of Latent Potential

Now, this works pretty well. I’ve been doing it pretty consistently for the past 2 weeks, and honestly, it’s not much of an effort to me now. The first week was the hardest: I had to remind myself of habits, and it was annoying. But then I got the hang of it and began doing it consistently.

For example, I began to exercise daily for 20 minutes. It was hard no doubt, and there were days I wanted to give up and one day, I did. I used a method called habit stacking: wherein you do something you enjoy (like Netflix) along with something you want to do (like exercising). But it has been two weeks now and the effects are showing up, as I’ve crossed the Plateau of Latent Potential James Clear mentions that because of certain circumstances, we may stop our habit for a day or two, but crossing that limit can turn the habit you’re trying to compound into a new, bad habit. So consistency was key and therefore, the first week was key.

If you’re thinking about forming new habits or breaking bad ones, and you don’t know how, buy the book on Amazon, and read this amazing 😮 summary by Ali Abdaal, whatever the case, I hope you harness the thousands of micro-changes you go through in a year to do what you truly want to do.
