roller hockey

It was not just any day. Yesterday the Telecable board, with its president José Luis Souto at the helm, began preparing the organization of the European women’s roller hockey final four, which will be held from April 30 to May 1 at the Palacio de Deportes. The concession was communicated on Sunday night to the Gijón City Council, which was the one who requested it from the continental federal entity.

It will be the third time that the city hosts this competition. The first time was in 2010, with the triumph of the La Calzada quintet over Alcorcón (5–2), while, on the second occasion, the Gijón team fell to Voltregá (0–1), with a goal from Natasha Lee, who defended the colors of the Catalan team at that time and today is one of its great bastions.

The award-winning manufacturing club, with five European Cups in its showcases, was impatiently awaiting what was an open secret. It should be remembered that last year, the Consistory refused the request of the European Skating Federation due to the added costs involved in organizing the tournament with the corresponding sanitary measures.

From the municipal level, the commitment was maintained, especially for the 25th anniversary of Telecable, which occurred in 2020, the year in which the European Cup was suspended due to the pandemic.

In this sense, the news of the award of the European final in Gijón was celebrated in style yesterday within the modest entity from Gijón, which has a place next to the La Algodonera track.

José Luis Souto, its president, was happy with the celebration of the event in Gijón. “It is, without a doubt, a great satisfaction to have the opportunity to organize such an important competition at home, but it will take a lot of work”, although he is clear that “it is worth it”.

The idea of the highest representative of Telecable Hockey is “trying to get as many spectators as possible into the Palacio de Deportes.” On the two previous occasions, between 2,500 and 3,000 fans gathered, which was a great success at the time.

Souto and his board are confident that the European final will be well promoted, despite the fact that during a weekend in which Sporting plays at home with Ibiza and the Half Marathon is held.

For his part, coach Fernando Sierra, who rested the squad until Thursday after three intense weeks with postponed matches, commented that “the players are very excited about being able to offer the fans the sixth European Cup, which we wanted to have celebrated when the club celebrated a quarter of a century of life” while thanking the insistence of the City Council for bringing the tournament, “which shows the support it gives us on a weekend that we hope will be the festival of Asturian sport”.
