Yes Android Studio does have a beautiful UI generator. But I had these 3 reasons for creating it.

  1. I wanted custom templates that can be generated by just hitting up a command — like generation of Bindable Layouts+Activities+Fragments. And also maybe have templates for 3rd party libraries in the future — like Mosby’s MVP classes, Conductor, Flow and so on… These things we don’t get by default with Android Studio’s Generator…
  2. I was learning Ruby at the time — and thought it would be a good learning opportunity to make something like andgen…
  3. I’ve been working on Rails for some time now — And I really like how it’s more oriented towards Terminal… Almost everything in Rails is done through commands… Which I think is pretty cool… So that’s where I got this idea and inspiration from…

So in short… Yes, it’s definitely not a replacement — it’s just a small addition to what we already have with Android Studio… :)

^I think I should add this part to the original article as well… As I hope it explains (to some extent) why I created andgen…
