“Watch Out”: Leveraging AI for Faster Disaster Response

Introduction

Living in a country frequently struck by natural disasters, especially earthquakes, has deeply shaped my perspective on preparedness and response. These events are often chaotic, leaving little time for humans to react effectively. This inspired me to create Watch Out, an AI-powered disaster detection system designed to identify risks faster than any human could. My journey with this project not only enhanced my technical skills but also earned me recognition, including winning Microsoft’s AI Skills Pitch Challenge—a milestone that further validated the potential of AI in disaster response.

The Problem: Rapid Disaster Escalation

Natural disasters, especially earthquakes, can cause immediate and unpredictable damage. Falling objects, structural instability, and other hazards often go unnoticed until it’s too late. The slower the response time, the greater the risk to lives and property.

Traditional detection and response systems often rely on human observations or pre-programmed sensors. While these are helpful, they have significant limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Humans may not notice subtle signs of escalating danger quickly enough.
  • Limited coverage: Sensors are often placed in fixed locations, which may miss critical events.
  • Communication gaps: Relaying information to responders can take precious time.

The Solution: How Watch Out Works

Watch Out is an AI-powered system that uses computer vision technology to detect falling objects or early signs of structural damage through security camera feeds. By analyzing video in real-time, the system identifies anomalies faster than a human observer.

  1. AI-Driven Detection:
    Using advanced computer vision algorithms, the system can spot falling objects, cracks, or other warning signs instantly.
  2. Real-Time Alerts:
    Once a potential danger is identified, Watch Out sends notifications to emergency responders, building managers, or relevant stakeholders.

    Thanks to support from Microsoft and access to cloud credits, I was able to scale the system for wider deployment, ensuring that multiple cameras can be monitored simultaneously.

    With AI's ability to process data at lightning speed, Watch Out significantly reduces response times, allowing action to be taken before the situation worsens.

The Journey: Building Watch Out

This project began as a simple idea—a “what if” moment as I considered how AI could save lives during disasters. Here’s how it developed:
