Let me explain why I’ve been pretty anti-social recently. Since September, I’ve been working flat out with our team of super talented data scientists to take Rummble Labs in a new open direction.

Mission patch from the Genome Laser project.

The mission to unleash our predictive machine learning platform to the world as an open source project took inspiration from the principles of Burning Man and my Genome Laser project, in which we sequenced the genome of the Nobel Prize winning inventor of the laser, Dr. Charles Townes, and blasted his DNA into space with a giant laser. Genome Laser was the first open source project that I helped to create with my friend Vincent.

Both start-ups and multinational organisations are now increasingly investing in building internal data science teams, or acquiring data science companies, to maximise the value that they can extract from their data.

The market disruption that open source caused to lower level data science infrastructure is now moving up the stack. Open source technologies such as Docker, Hadoop, and Apache Spark, have superseded proprietary operating systems and databases. Meanwhile, most vendors higher up the data science stack (i.e. providing predictive analytics, recommendations, and machine learning APIs) are effectively licensing black box solutions.

In-house data science teams demand more flexibility to build and customise the algorithms and integrate the predictive outputs with their internal systems. Furthermore, there are many companies with data control policies that require the hosting of consumer data behind their firewall, which a flexible open source solution will allow.

Without further ado, please allow me to introduce Seldon: the Open Predictive Platform.

In 2015, we are excited to be shipping Seldon, which includes an end-to-end platform and collection of cutting edge machine learning algorithms. It will be freely available for anyone to download, deploy, customise, and contribute back to the project.

Seldon can integrate with any digital environment where there is real-time behavioural data such as media, e-commerce and advertising, across web and mobile.

Seldon’s cloud platform is still pushing half a billion API calls per month and will continue to be available.

We’re inviting early adopters to join the private beta of the Open Predictive Platform, which will be shipping from January — please sign up for the newsletter here: http://seldon.io

If you like the sound of Seldon’s new open direction then please help me to spread the word by hitting the “recommend” button below and sharing this post with your network.

Thanks for reading and happy holidays!
